Original handmade etching on copper plate with aquatint, in Prussian blue ink on Hanemuhle paper. Hand-gilded. 20cm X 21cm unframed.
This piece is part of the 'Wild Icons' series of etchings, featuring endangered animals from Brazil. The Pernambuco Pygmy Owl is listed as "critically endangered" and "possibly extinct" due to the destruction and fragmentation of its habitat. Despite targeted searches, the species has not been sighted since 2001 and there may be fewer than 50 individuals in the wild. Very little is known about them, other than they eat cicadas - can you spot one in the picture?
10% of all proceeds will be donated to the World Wildlife Fund to support their conservation work in the Amazon.
